Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

Attending an identity check - page 2 of 10

When you have submitted your details on GMC Online, your application will be assessed. We will then email you to invite you to book an identity check at our Manchester or London offices. You must complete the identity check within three months of your application being approved. If you do not, we will not be able to grant your registration. When you attend, we will take your photograph and inspect the original documents you provided in support of your application.

If you live outside the UK please consider whether you will be able to come to the UK in time for your identity check. If you need to apply for a visa, you may need to get other evidence before receiving your visa. You need to be sure this will not prevent you attending the identity check with the GMC. We will not be able to extend the time limit for the identity check for any reason.

For more information about this, please see our guidance on identity checks (opens in a new window).

More information about the documents you need to provide is set out in this guidance.

You are reading the guidance for applying to restore registration without a licence to practise – for doctors who have previously relinquished their registration and been granted voluntary erasure. If this is not the guidance you need, click here to return to the Applications menu.
