Provisional registration
Foundation Programme year 1
After you complete your undergraduate degree you will take up a place on the Foundation Programme, the first year of which makes up your 12 month internship.
During your Foundation Programme year 1 (F1) you are required to hold provisional registration. This guidance will tell you how to apply for provisional registration.
If you want to see more information about internships, such as delaying the start date of your registration, the role of your medical school or completing your internship, please see our internship guidance
(opens in a new window).
Moving from provisional registration to full registration
Generally speaking you will be eligible for full registration once you have completed 12 months' foundation programme training and demonstrated that you have met the outcomes for F1.
Once you proceed to full registration, you will be required to complete 12 months' practice in an approved practice setting. For more information, please see our section on approved practice settings
(opens in a new window).
Retaining your provisional registration status
There is currently no time limit on the period you can hold provisional registration. But if you do not move to full registration, you will continue to be restricted to the type of employment that provisional registration allows. Also, after your first two years of provisional registration you will have to pay the full annual registration fee (see our Fees guidance
(opens in a new window) for current fee levels) to maintain it.
You are reading the guidance for applying for registration for graduates from UK medical schools who have not completed an internship. If this is not the guidance you need, click here to return to the Registration applications menu.
