Registering as a doctor – page 2 of 11
Important Information
Busy periods
We experience high volumes of applications from June to August and it can take us longer during this time to process applications. It is, therefore, in your interests to apply as early as possible and well in advance of the date you will need registration.
Certificates of good standing
You will be asked to provide an original certificate of good standing from all of the medical regulatory authorities of any countries where you have practised or have held registration in outside of the UK in the last five years. Please note that they are only valid for a period of three months of the date of issue.
Please note that you may not have been required to provide this information when you applied for provisional registration however it is a requirement for full registration.
Certificates of Experience
You will be asked to provide an original Certificate of Experience form completed and signed by an authorised officer of your UK medical school or deanery. (Note that the ‘authorised officer’ is the person appointed by the medical school or deanery who must complete and sign your Certificate of Experience).
Please contact us to obtain a Certificate of Experience form that you will need to pass to your medical school or deanery to be completed.
Please note that the certificate must not have been signed off more than 28 days before the internship was completed.
Taking up employment
You must not undertake any post or clinical duties that require full registration until your application for full registration has been processed and full registration is granted. You can check your registration status online by accessing your MyGMC account. Only once you are registered and from the date that your full registration commences from will your full registration appear on the List of Registered Medical Practitioners which lists all doctors who are registered to practise in the UK.
There is more information about these steps on the following pages of this guidance.
You are reading the guidance for applying for registration for nationals from the EEA, Switzerland and other doctors with EC rights, who hold an acceptable primary medical qualification from a medical school outside the EEA or Switzerland, and have completed an internship in the UK. If this is not the guidance you need, click here to return to the Registration applications menu.
