Registering as a doctor – graduates from medical schools in countries outside the UK and EEA who have passed, or intend to take the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) test

This guidance provides registration information for doctors from medical schools outside the UK and the European Economic Area (EEA) and who are:

  • A national from a country outside the UK and EEA who has graduated from a medical school outside the EEA and UK

OR

  • A UK national who has graduated from a medical school outside the UK and EEA

OR

  • A national from a country outside the UK and EEA who has graduated from a medical school within the EEA (except the UK)

AND

Once you have passed the PLAB test you can apply for provisional registration if you have not completed your internship. If you have not passed the PLAB test please read our PLAB test guidance Opens in new window(opens in a new window).

Your application will be an online application. At the end of this guidance you will be given a link to set up an account in our secure web portal called MyGMC. If you do not have a PIN and password for MyGMC, you should contact us Opens in new window(opens in a new window).

Please note: You must be granted registration within three years of the date on which you passed Part 2 of the PLAB test.

This type of registration is granted for the purposes of completing an acceptable programme for provisionally registered doctors but not further. In the UK, an acceptable programme for provisionally registered doctors is the Foundation programme year 1. Any practice undertaken outside an acceptable programme for provisionally registered doctors would be counted as technically unregistered practice. Technically unregistered practice is illegal and any experience gained while unregistered would not count as experience to move to full registration.

Please note that in order to undertake any other posts, including Foundation programme year 2, you must hold full registration.

Your steps to registration

  • Pass the PLAB test
  • Read this guidance (8 pages)
  • Log in to MyGMC, complete your application and pay your fee (you will need your GMC reference number, PIN and password to do this)
  • Send copies of your supporting documentary evidence by post

There is more information about these steps on the following pages of this guidance.
