Registering as a doctor – for graduates who have passed, or intend to take the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) test

This guidance provides registration information for doctors who are:

  • A national from a country outside the UK and EEA who has graduated from a medical school outside the EEA and UK

OR

  • A UK national who has graduated from a medical school outside the UK and EEA

OR

  • A national from a country outside the UK and EEA who has graduated from a medical school within the EEA (except the UK)

AND

Once you have passed the PLAB test you can apply for full registration if you have completed your internship overseas. If you have not passed the PLAB test please read our PLAB test guidance Opens in new window(opens in a new window).

For your first 12 months of full registration you will be required to work within an approved practice setting. This means that you will only be able to work in settings that have been approved by the General Medical Council as having sufficiently supportive and quality assurance systems aimed at improving quality in place.

Your application will be an online application. At the end of this guidance you will be given a link to set up an account in our secure web portal called MyGMC. If you do not have a PIN and password for MyGMC, you should contact us Opens in new window(opens in a new window).

Please note: You must be granted registration within three years of the date on which you passed Part 2 of the PLAB test.

Your steps to registration

  • Pass the PLAB test
  • Read this guidance (9 pages)
  • Log in to MyGMC, complete your application and pay your fee (you will need your GMC reference number, PIN and password to do this)
  • Send copies of your supporting documentary evidence by post
