Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

Reapplying for entry onto the Specialist Register with a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) or entry onto the GP Register with a Certificate of Eligibility for GP Registration (CEGPR)

This page is to help doctors who have previously applied for entry onto the Specialist Register with a CESR or entry onto the GP Register with a CEGPR, but were unsuccessful, and now wish to reapply.

Once you have started your online application, you will have a period of six months to complete it. It will automatically be closed after this time. Instructions on setting up your online account are given at the end of this guidance.

Your application will be an online application. At the end of this guidance you will be given a link to enter our secure web portal.

To be able to reapply, you must make your application within three years of the date of the decision letter you received stating that your previous application was unsuccessful. This letter, if issued before 1 April 2010, will have come from the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board (PMETB), rather than the GMC.

You will also need to:

  • refer to the decision letter you received after your previous application
  • provide evidence that your training, experience and qualifications now meet the required standards
  • give us the names and contact details of your referees

When we have received your application, supporting evidence and structured reports from your referees we will make a final check and then, in most cases, send your application for evaluation to the relevant Royal College or Faculty (opens in a new window).

The Royal College or Faculty will evaluate your evidence and make a recommendation to us as to whether your training, qualifications and experience meet the standards of the training acceptable for a CCT. They will then give us a recommendation on whether or not you have fulfilled the required standard.

Once your application is complete, the assessment process will take around three months.

Important notice

If you received your decision on or before 22 March 2011 you will need to apply using a hard copy application form. Please contact us and we will email you a copy of the form.

The following guidance is still applicable apart from instructions specific to completing the application in GMC Online.
