General Medical Council
Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice
This page is to help GMC registered doctors who are eligible* to apply for entry onto the GP Register with a Certificate of Eligibility for GP Registration (CEGPR).
Once you have started your online application, you will have a period of six months to complete it. It will automatically be closed after this time. Instructions on setting up your online account are given at the end of this guidance.
Your application will be an online application. At the end of this guidance you will be given a link to enter our secure web portal.
To be eligible to apply you must have either a specialist qualification or at least six months continuous specialist training in general practice.
There are limitations around appointment to General Practice posts in the UK. Please read about general practice in the UK before making your application.
When we have received your application, supporting evidence, structured reports from your referees, and the application fee, we will make a final check and then, in most cases, send your application to the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) (opens in a new window) for evaluation.
The RCGP will evaluate your evidence and make a recommendation to us as to whether your training, qualifications and experience meet the requirements of the General Practice CCT curriculum.
Please read this guidance carefully and in good time before you need your registration. You should bear in mind that it can take a long time to compile your supporting evidence and contact your referees to discuss your references. Once your application is complete, the assessment process will take around three months.
There is more information about these steps on the following pages of this guidance.
*If you are not sure if you are reading the right guidance for you, you can check by answering a few questions (opens in a new window). (You may have already answered these questions. If you are still unsure, please contact us.)
