Welcome to UK practice

'Useful from start to end. I gained confidence and my awareness increased.'

What is Welcome to UK Practice (WTUKP)?

WTUKP is a free half-day learning session to help doctors new to practice, or new to the country, to understand the ethical issues that will affect them and their patients on a day to day basis.

See what attendees think of the course in our short film:

In the session, you will:

  • Look at the role of the GMC and our standards and guidance on what makes a good doctor
  • Learn from the real life experiences of senior UK doctors through our video 'Things I wish I'd known'
  • Work through interactive ethical scenarios on issues faced by doctors new to UK practice, including consent, confidentiality, raising concerns 0-18 care and prescribing
  • Create your own learning log with tips and reflections to take away with you

How can WTUKP help you?

To date, over 1,500 doctors have taken part in WTUKP events across the UK. Feedback from our sessions has been really positive, with attendees saying:

'It has been one of the most interesting courses/educational days I have ever attended'

'A great way to meet other doctors and learn from their experiences. Despite being a new UK graduate, I found this a really useful and thought-provoking can never be too familiar with GMP'

'There are huge differences in practising medicine in my home country and the UK, and this session helped me to realise that'

From a sample of doctors attending the programme:

  • 98% of doctors said it helped them to reflect on their practice
  • 99% said they would change their practice as a result of attending the course

Online scenario based tool

Our online scenario based tool helps doctors assess their knowledge and application of our core guidance, Good medical practice. It also helps doctors find more information and advice.

The tool contains 16 different case studies (grouped under five themes) that explore ethical challenges in a variety of clinical situations.

The tool is a learning resource and you can use it anonymously and free of charge. By working through the case studies, you'll be able to identify areas where your knowledge is strong and also where it can be improved. We recommend watching the short instructional video on the home page before using it.

More information about what is expected of a doctor in the UK can be found on our PLAB webpages and guidance webpages, which include learning materials such as flow charts, fact sheets and examples of what happens when doctors don’t follow the guidance.
