Making a complaint

Information for patients

The GMC has developed an interactive guide called Patients’ help, for patients who are considering making a complaint about the GMC.

View Patients Help

Please click here if you have trouble accessing Patients’ help.

If you have read the content of Patients’ help and feel confident your complaint should go to the GMC, please fill in our online complaint form (alternatively, you can download a complaints form (97kb, pdf documentpdf) and send it by post).

Access welsh language versionAccess Welsh language versions of Patients help and the online form.

Information for health professionals

We provide separate guidance for doctors, medical directors and clinical governance managers on referring a doctor to the GMC. Read A Health Professional's Guide - How to Refer a Doctor to the GMC.

Doctors who have been subject to a complaint can access guidance in Doctors under investigation.

When to submit your complaint to a doctor’s employer

The GMC's powers mean we can take action in the most serious cases. In many cases patients should complain to the doctors employers or via local procedures. See our page on referrals to a doctor’s employer / contracting body.
