AURE responds to the vote by the Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament

The Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament has voted today in favour of amendments which require a healthcare professional to register in the host Member State prior to being granted authorisation to practice.

The plenary session of the European Parliament will now consider the Directive at a meeting in Strasbourg on December 17.

Member of the Alliance of UK Health Regulators on Europe (AURE) and GMC President Sir Graeme Catto has welcomed today's outcome:

"We welcome the Legal Affairs Committee's votes to require healthcare professionals to be registered in a host Member State in order for them to practise and also to ensure the exchange of information between Member States about the fitness to practise of individual professionals . We are currently studying the detail of today's votes and will be lobbying to ensure today's commitments on patient safety are maintained when the plenary session of the European Parliament meets on December 17."
