Staff profiles
Please see below profiles of several members of GMC staff, which provide a flavour of working in the organisation.
Emma, Contact Centre Adviser
Emma has worked in the GMC’s bustling Contact Centre for 4 years. The organisation’s nerve centre for phone and email communications, the Contact Centre deals with hundreds of calls from doctors and others around the world every day. Emma loves the fact that each day is different, and values the camaraderie she shares with colleagues.
She says: “I work in the contact centre. It is a fantastic team as everyone is supportive. It is unlike any other contact centre I have worked in as I feel I really matter.
“The challenges that are thrown up are exciting and every day is different. We answer calls, emails and letters from doctors regarding registration, as well as speak to a variety of employers and members of the public on a wide range of issues.
“I also get the chance to work in reception which involves verifying a doctor’s identity and documentation before granting them registration. It’s great to get the opportunity to get involved and have the chance to help people face to face.
Career development and progress
“In addition, the GMC introduced a plan so that contact centre advisors could develop their knowledge and skills and progress further within the department. With the help and support from my manager I was able to progress.
”This has led to further development opportunities such as mentoring, coaching and training within the contact centre.
Exceeding expectations
"I was attracted to work for the GMC as I wanted to find a customer service role where I could concentrate on what I was good at – providing a good service. The GMC contact centre role appealed as there was no sales aspect to the role.
I am happy to say that I work for the GMC. The support and development opportunities I have been given have exceeded my initial expectations.”
Lisa, Internal Communications Manager
It is Lisa’s job to help keep 500 staff across five office sites in touch with key issues, and to make sure colleagues receive the information they need, at the right time, in a way that suits them. The challenges are constantly changing and Lisa is called upon to juggle several projects as well as delivering the day to day job. Her role requires creativity, good communications skills and bundles of energy and enthusiasm.
She says: “I joined two years ago and advise on how best to communicate to and engage with staff across the organisation. It’s been great – I’ve had plenty to get my teeth into, and have set up a range of new communications channels such as staff newsletters, intranet pages and seminars. In addition to communicating news to all staff, I work with individual teams, drawing up communications plans for their particular projects - these can include anything from developing posters, e-bulletins or producing a video for staff.
“I also act as the communications project lead on a couple of projects, coordinating the communications plans with other comms teams in the directorate.
“My background is in the health service but I was keen to find an organisation outside of the NHS which still enabled me to make use of my health related experience. The recruitment consultant said it was a good place to work and after my interview/s I thought the people were nice, the package for staff was excellent and I liked the offices!
Innovative
“All of my days are quite different, which makes it interesting. I'm based in the London office and I work closely with the web team and also our in-house designer. I am often in contact with people from across the organisation, researching or editing copy for one of our internal publications.
“One day I could be arranging a photoshoot, and the next I could be looking into new and innovative ways to communicate to staff.
Training opportunities
“I have been able to attend in-house training courses such as managing people, project management etc and have also been able to attend external courses and events such as an introduction to photoshop and an internal communications conference.
“I like working at the GMC. Everyone is really friendly and my role is quite varied. Despite the often hectic day, we still enjoy being at work and, to me, that's the most important thing.”
Jennifer, Education Quality Officer
Jennifer is in a fortunate position – she enjoys her work and finds it extremely interesting. As an Education Quality Officer her role involves ensuring that medical students and foundation doctors receive the best education and training. It’s something she believes in strongly, and she is delighted to be able to make a difference. Jennifer has been impressed by the training she has received at the GMC and – though she joined the GMC with high expectations – says she has not been disappointed!
Jennifer says: ”In my role I manage the quality assurance process for Dundee Medical School and the Northern and Oxford deaneries – it’s quite a responsibility, because they are overseeing the training of the doctors of the future.
”My job involves a lot of liaison work with the Schools and deaneries and the GMC Associates appointed to the teams visiting these institutions. I write reports of the visits and papers for the consideration of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Boards, and take the lead on various special projects too.
“I believe passionately that students and junior doctors deserve the very best education and training and patients deserve the very best educated and trained doctors. I feel privileged to be a part of the work in driving up standards and making a difference to medical education in the UK.
Confidence
“The GMC is a very good employer to work for. They invest in their staff and reward hard work. It is a very professional organisation and because of that you have confidence in the ability and commitment of staff throughout the organisation, not just the ones you work with on a day to day basis."
“I have undertaken a variety of training. This has included cultural awareness, data protection, coaching, mentoring, software training, communications for quality assurance and this is has all been in a little over a year."
“I really enjoy working at the GMC, I came to the job with a clear set of expectations and I have not been disappointed."
