Patients and Public Reference Group
The main purpose of the Patient and Public Reference Group (PPRG) is to input into policy development at the GMC through drawing upon the experiences and perspectives of members.
The PPRG was originally formed in 1999 as the Patient Representative Group and consisted of representatives of patient and consumer organisations. There are now 17 such representatives on the PPRG. Since early 2006 the PPRG has also included seven members of the public.
The PPRG meets four times a year. At each meeting, PPRG members discuss a major policy issue facing the GMC. A briefing on the issue is provided by a member of the GMC staff. PPRG members then split into breakout groups to discuss the issue further before coming back together to feed their views on the issue to GMC staff.
In the past the PPRG have considered issues relating to the reform of medical regulation, the potential role of patient and colleague questionnaires in the appraisal and assessment of doctors, and personal beliefs and medical practice.
