Tomorrow's Doctors Implementation Workshop

1 April 2010

On 1 April 2010 the GMC ran a workshop in Malone House, Belfast to support Queen's University Belfast School of Medicine in their implementation of the revised standards and outcomes in Tomorrow's Doctors 2009, and to facilitate engagement with employers, post-graduate training providers and other stakeholders.  

Attendees at the event included:

  • representatives from Queen's School of Medicine (including medical students)
  • the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency and its foundation school
  • the Regional Health and Social Care Board
  • the Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority
  • Education Leads from the Belfast, Northern, Southern and Western Health and Social Care Trusts and Skills for Health.

The event was also attended by GMC Council Members Dr John Jenkins, Dr Joan Martin and Professor Jim McKillop.

Staff from the GMC NI office attended the Sinn Fein Ard Fheis in the RDS, Dublin on March 6 and met with elected representatives including Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness MP MLA and Sinn Fein Party President Gerry Adams MP MLA. It provided an opportunity to highlight the consultation on Revalidation launched on March 1.

Niall Dickson, GMC Chief Executive visited Northern Ireland on Friday 5 March to meet with key stakeholders from the health and social care sector, the Department of Health, professional bodies and the private sector to launch the GMC consultation on 'Revalidation: the way ahead'.

The consultation will run until Friday 4 June 2010 and provides an important opportunity for those with an interest in this subject to help shape how revalidation will be implemented. For further information on the consultation visit www.gmc-uk.org/thewayahead

GMC staff member delivers a seminar on the GMC's new guidance on Confidentiality

The GMC Northern Ireland office and Michael Keegan, Policy Adviser in the Standards and Fitness to Practice Directorate delivered seminars on the GMC's new guidance on Confidentiality to over 100 delegates on 25 and 26 of February.

The seminars in the Derry/Londonderry and Belfast aimed at bringing doctors and other health professionals with an interest up to date with the new guidance. During the sessions Michael used case studies from Good Medical Practice in Action to highlight the relevant legal and ethical considerations relating to confidentiality and disclosing information.

The first seminar which took place in Altnagelvin Hospital was aimed primarily at junior doctors but also included Western Trust doctors, doctors from GP Practices in the North West, and medical students.

GMC Council members Dr John Jenkins and Dr Joan Martin led the Belfast seminar in the Ulster Hall along with more than 40 of the GMC's key interest groups including patient representatives, doctors, and representatives from the health and social care trusts and Health and Social Care Board.

Staff from the GMC NI office attended the SDLP Party Conference in the Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 February. The event was well attended by party delegates due to the contest for party leadership between Dr Alasdair McDonnell MP MLA and Minister for Social Development, Margaret Ritchie MLA.

GMC staff met with outgoing SDLP party leader Mark Durkin MP MLA, newly elected party leader Margaret Ritchie MLA, as well as SDLP Health Committee member Conall McDevitt MLA.

Delegates expressed an interest in a variety our core guidance with several MLAs and local councillors picking up Patient's Help postcards for future use.

The General Medical Council office in Northern Ireland exhibited at the Alliance Party Conference in the Dunadry Hotel, Templepatrick on Saturday 23 January.

Staff from the GMC NI office met with Alliance leader Mr David Ford MLA and the party's health spokesperson Mr Kieran McCarthy MLA who were keen to discuss issues relating to medical regulation.

GMC 0-18 guidance and Good Medical Practice proved popular with delegates who included doctors and other health professionals.
