The statutory rules and regulations that govern the way we work have been updated on many occasions over the years. They will continue to be amended as medical regulation develops to reflect the changing needs of society.

It would not be practical to list on these pages all of the previous versions of the Medical Act or previous rules and regulations. However, a selection of previous rules is provided below.

Fitness to practise

Prior to 2004 there were separate rules dealing with the different aspects of doctors’ fitness to practise: conduct, health and performance. These were replaced by the General Medical Council (Fitness to Practise) Rules 2004 (pdf)
