Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

Being fair: challenges and opportunties

On 12 September 2012 we explored the challenges and opportunities of being fair when we hosted a conference at the British Museum in London.

Being fair and objective in delivering our functions is the cornerstone of our work as a regulator. This conference brought together senior people and influential organisations to explore common themes, including:

  • dealing with concerns and complaints.
  • progression in medical education and training.
  • raising standards through revalidation.

The event was highly interactive, including lively panel discussions, key speakers and audience voting.

Conference report

Niall Dickson committed the GMC to work with others on getting better data and analysis, understanding who complains to us, further work looking at career progression, and joint work with the Medical Schools Council looking at selection into medical schools.
