Regulating doctors, ensuring good medical practice

International Revalidation Symposium

The event

The General Medical Council, the Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States and the Health Foundation co-hosted the International Revalidation Symposium in London on 2 and 3 December 2010. The aim of the event was to increase understanding and build the evidence base for developing systems of competence assurance for doctors in practice.

The programme

The symposium was divided into separate sessions over two half-days. The sessions covered:

  • Regulation and patient safety
  • International models and approaches to licensing and revalidation
  • Evaluating the evidence base
  • The challenges of implementation

For further information about the themes discussed, please read the International Revalidation Symposium Discussion Summary (pdf).

Publication of proceedings

Following the symposium, speakers developed papers based on their presentations. The papers included in this Publication of proceedings (pdf) reflect the good practice and lessons learned from the research, evidence and expertise of professional regulators and others from around the world.
